The Oʻahu Army Natural Resources Program is contracted by the U.S. Army Garrison – Hawaiʻi to oversee compliance with the Federal Endangered Species Act on the island of Oʻahu. The goal of the program is to effectively balance the requirements of the Army’s training mission with it’s natural resource responsibilities.

Two incipient weed species, Crocosmia X crocosmiiflora & Juncus effusus, are currently encroaching on the native forest of Ka’ala. If left unchecked, these aggressive weeds could greatly alter the native vegetation. We will spend the day digging up the underground Crocosmia corms and Juncus root systems using hand trowels and shovels.

Ka‘ala is the highest point on the island of O‘ahu and is home to many unique plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. We will take time to explore the forest by walking along the boardwalk trail. Weather permitting, we will enjoy great views of the entire island!

Attire: Shoes and clothes that you’re willing to get dirty! (we recommend bringing waterproof/rubber boots or reef walkers/tabis for the work portion of the day, if you have them)*. Long pants and long sleeve shirt is required.
*OANRP has some boots you can borrow if you don’t have your own.

Tools: All weeding tools and gloves will be provided

Requirements (physical and age limitations): Able to hike 45 minutes round trip

Supplies needed: A packing list will be sent.
